Chapter 4 - ENTERING THROUGH THE MECHANICAL ROOM

The mechanical room of the Chestnut Hill residence was designed as a fortress of modern residential engineering, housing high-efficiency boilers, backup generators, and computerized climate controls. Because I had personally reviewed and paid for the architectural blueprints when Wyatt purchased the lot, I knew every conduit, structural beam, and security sensor hardwired into the walls.

When I unlocked that side entrance, I bypassed the estate's primary motion detectors by stepping into a known dead zone engineered specifically for maintenance access. The darkness of the utility corridor became my ally.

While Sabrina remained upstairs celebrating with her unwitting guests—unaware that her brutal demonstration of torture had been captured frame by audio frame on my digital recorder—I assessed Wyatt’s immediate medical condition in the basement shadows.

His skin was clammy and pale, a classic symptom of septic shock or advancing narcotic toxicity. The crude bandages wrapped around his leg were stained with dried blood and pus, indicating that the compound fracture of his knee was dangerously infected. Without immediate, sterile surgical intervention and broad-spectrum antibiotics, he was running out of time.

My phone buzzed silently against my palm, signaling an encrypted text message from Marcus Vance, the executive director of Heartland Freight Systems’ corporate security division.

“Perimeter secure, Chairman Yates. Two transport units loaded with federal marshals and state troopers are staging three blocks away. Awaiting your go-order.”

I typed a swift, concise reply using one hand while supporting Wyatt with the other:

“Move in. Secure all exits. Do not let a single guest leave the premises. Prepare medical evacuation team for basement extraction.”

The trap was fully set. Sabrina and her father had spent weeks turning this basement into a slaughterhouse for my son. Now, it was going to serve as the courtroom where their grand conspiracy met its absolute, unyielding end.
