Chapter 14 - RECOVERING IN THE LIGHT

Spring arrived in Kansas City with a brilliant burst of emerald green foliage, warm sunshine, and clear blue skies.

At our family ranch outside the city—a quiet, expansive property far removed from the superficial glamour of Chestnut Hill—Wyatt was finally learning how to walk again.

Following a grueling series of complex orthopedic surgeries and months of intensive physical therapy under the care of specialized sports medicine doctors, the titanium-reinforced joint in his right knee was healing remarkably well. He walked with the assistance of a sturdy wooden cane, but his spirit was unbroken, his eyes bright with renewed purpose.

We sat together on the wide wooden porch of the ranch house, watching a gentle breeze ripple across the tall grass of the pasture while old Heartland semi-trucks rolled steadily along the distant highway horizon.

“Dad,” Wyatt said softly, turning his head to look at me with profound gratitude. “I almost lost everything. If you had listened to my text... if you had stayed away like I asked... I wouldn't be here right now.”

I took a slow sip of my black coffee, looking out over the rolling hills.

“A father doesn't abandon his son in the dark, Wyatt,” I said evenly. “No matter how deep the trench is, you dig your way down, and you pull him back up into the light.”

He smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years. He had successfully restructured his tech enterprise under secure, impenetrable family trusts, ensuring that his life’s work could never again be compromised by corporate predators or fraudulent marriages.

The nightmare was fully behind us, washed away by the unyielding power of truth and protection.
