Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT CONFRONTATION

Before Sabrina could twist away or scream out for her father, the heavy wooden door at the top of the basement stairs burst open with a resounding crash.
Heavy tactical boots thundered down the steps as state troopers and federal transport marshals flooded the stairwell, weapons drawn and secured in low-ready positions.
“Federal agents! Nobody move!” a commanding voice bellowed, echoing off the concrete.
The lead officer, a tall state trooper captain with an imposing build, scanned the basement instantly, his eyes taking in Wyatt chained to the concrete pillar, the bloodstained floor, and my hand locked firmly around Sabrina’s thrashing wrist.
“Secure the perimeter! Suspect in custody!” the captain shouted, gesturing to two troopers who lunged forward and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto Sabrina’s wrists with practiced efficiency.
Sabrina shrieked hysterically, kicking her designer heels against the floor as they hauled her backward up the stairs. “Get your hands off me! My father is Irving Palmer! You can't do this! We’re wealthy people! This is illegal!”
“Save it for the magistrate, ma'am,” the trooper replied coldly, pushing her upward toward the waiting cruisers.
As the commotion echoed through the house, the upper-level party guests—lured out of the living room by the flashing red lights and shouting officers—pushed their way toward the kitchen doorway, staring down into the basement in stunned, drunken bewilderment.
Among them stood Irving Palmer and Piper, both holding crystal champagne flutes filled with expensive scotch. Their festive smiles evaporated instantly when they looked down and saw federal agents swarming the stairs, followed by paramedics wheeling my battered son out on a stretcher.
Irving’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand glittering shards against the polished hardwood floor. He turned to bolt toward the back patio doors, but Heartland’s corporate security director, Marcus Vance, stepped smoothly out from the hallway shadows, blocking his escape and flashing a federal arrest warrant directly in his face.

“Irving Palmer, you’re under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and attempted murder,” Marcus announced loudly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent, paralyzed room.
Piper let out a strangled gasp, dropping her purse as state troopers moved in to secure the remaining co-conspirators. The grand New Year’s Eve gala had transformed into a textbook federal sting operation in a matter of minutes.
