Chapter 3 - The Whispers Behind the DoorDay Eight arrived.

The financial test was set to end at midnight. Chief Tunde was scheduled to return to Lagos, unfreeze the accounts, and hold a press conference exposing the entire situation as a compliance exercise.
At three o'clock in the afternoon, Sade decided to surprise Kad at his private apartment in Ikoyi. She wanted to be there when her father called to give them his blessing.
She used the spare key Kad had given her, quietly unlocking the front door, wearing a simple silk robe she had brought over.
The apartment was dead silent.
Sade walked softly down the tiled hallway toward the master bedroom, holding a box of fresh pastries.
As she reached the bedroom doorâwhich was cracked open an inchâshe heard the sound of champagne glasses clinking together, followed by a loud, familiar laugh.
Sade stopped in her tracks, her blood running cold.
It was Bisiâs voice.
âI canât believe how stupid she is, Kad!â Bisi giggled from inside the room. âShe actually believes her father is broke!â
Kadâs voice answered with an arrogant, mocking sneer. âSheâs naive, Bisi. She thought I was going to marry her for her personality! I spent two years pretending to care about her stupid art galleries!â
Sade felt her knees go weak. The box of pastries slipped from her fingers, but she caught it instinctively before it hit the floor, backing up against the hallway wall.
She leaned her head against the doorframe, tears streaming down her face, listening through the crack.
Inside the bedroom, Kad was sitting on the edge of the bed in his shirt, pulling Bisi into his lap. Bisi was wearing a silk robe, sipping champagne, resting her head against his chest.
âSo when do we transfer the offshore account?â Bisi asked, tracing her fingernail down Kadâs chest.
âThe fifty million naira we managed to siphon from her private trust before the freeze is already cleared in Dubai,â Kad laughed coldly. âNow that her father is officially bankrupt, sheâs useless to us. Iâm breaking off the engagement tonight.â
âAnd what about her fatherâs estate?â Bisi asked with a cruel smirk.
âLet her rot in a rental apartment,â Kad sneered. âShe dismissed her driver when he tried to warn her. She deserves everything she gets.â
Sade pressed her hand against her mouth to smother her sobs, horror and betrayal washing over her like a tidal wave.

Her father had been right about everything.
Kad had never loved her. Bisi had never been her sister. They were partners in crime, lovers in secret, using her for two years to bleed her familyâs fortune dry.
