The Box

ACT 4 – The Box
The wooden box was old.
Its edges were worn smooth with time.
Jonathan had clearly opened it countless times.
Sarah hesitated.
Her hands trembled as she slowly lifted the lid.
Inside were only three things.
An old photograph.
A handwritten letter.
And a tiny child's bracelet.
Nothing looked valuable.
Yet somehow...
They felt priceless.
Sarah picked up the photograph first.
The moment she turned it over...
The color drained from her face.
Written in faded blue ink were four simple words.
Sarah & Jonathan
Summer 2014
Her hands began to shake.
Ethan looked up.
"Mom..."
"Do you know him?"
Sarah couldn't answer.
She stared at the picture.
It showed two young people sitting on the dock of a quiet lake.
Laughing.
Holding hands.
Completely in love.
Jonathan Hale.
Long before he became one of the richest men in America.
And beside him...
A much younger Sarah.
The memories came rushing back.
Eleven years earlier...
They had fallen deeply in love.
Jonathan wasn't famous yet.
He was just an ambitious young entrepreneur with impossible dreams.
Sarah believed in every one of them.
They planned a future together.
A home.
A family.
A life.
But Jonathan's wealthy family had other plans.
They believed Sarah wasn't good enough.
She came from a poor family.
Jonathan came from one of the most powerful business dynasties in the country.
His parents demanded that he end the relationship.
When he refused...
They made sure Sarah disappeared from his life.
Heartbroken...
She walked away.
Without telling Jonathan the truth.
She had just discovered she was pregnant.
Jonathan spent years believing she had simply stopped loving him.
He never knew...
