Chapter 7 - The Missing LedgerDante crossed his arms, leaning against the edge of the mahogany desk.

"Your father didn't just audit the Varga accounts by accident, Elena," Dante explained, his tone turning serious. "He discovered a secret ledger detailing three hundred million dollars in laundered drug money routed through the city's municipal development fund."
Elena shook her head in disbelief. "That's impossible. My father is an honest accountant. He would never touch drug money."
"He didn't touch it. He tried to expose it," Dante corrected her. "And that's why the Vargas kidnapped him two weeks ago. They thought he gave the digital backups to you."
The room spun slightly. All the pieces of the puzzle suddenly snapped into place—the strange phone calls, the broken locks on their apartment door, the menacing men trailing her from work.
"And you?" Elena asked, her voice cracking slightly. "Why do you care about the ledger?"
"Because the Vargas are using those funds to buy up shipping lanes on the North Pier—lanes that belong to my family," Dante said coldly. "They are stepping on my turf. Your father is collateral damage in a war they started. But if we find him, we find the ledger. And that destroys them."

"So we're allies of convenience," Elena whispered.
"Exactly," Dante replied, pushing off the desk and walking toward the door. "Get some sleep, Elena. Tomorrow morning, we go hunting."
