Chapter 1 - Ten Minutes LateThe mahogany clock on the grand marble wall of the syndicate’s penthouse suite ticked with a heavy, menacing rhythm.

Ten minutes.
In the underworld, ten minutes wasn't just a delay; it was an invitation to a death sentence.
Elena Vance stood outside the heavy double doors of Dante Moretti’s private office, her breathing shallow and uneven. Her hands trembled slightly as she adjusted the strap of her leather portfolio. She had rushed across the rain-slicked streets of downtown Chicago, dodging traffic and hiding in alleys to escape a tail she couldn't shake.
The heavy oak doors swung open silently before she could even raise her hand to knock.
Standing in the doorway was Marcus, Dante’s towering, stone-faced head of security. His dark eyes swept over her with icy suspicion.
"You're late," Marcus said, his voice a low, threatening rumble. "The Don does not wait for anyone."
"I'm sorry," Elena murmured, stepping past him into the dimly lit, smoke-scented office. "Traffic on the bridge was completely blocked. It won't happen again."
At the far end of the room, sitting behind a massive obsidian desk carved from a single slab of black stone, sat Dante Moretti.
The mafia boss didn't look up immediately. He continued signing a stack of legal manifests with a heavy gold fountain pen, the scratching sound grating against the dead silence of the room. At twenty-eight, Dante ruled the Midwestern underground with an iron fist, his cold grey eyes and sharp jawline striking fear into rival syndicates across the country.
Finally, he stopped writing. He slowly raised his head, fixing his terrifying, predatory gaze directly onto Elena.
"Excuses are the language of the dead, Ms. Vance," Dante spoke, his voice deep, smooth, and laced with absolute authority. "In my world, time is currency. And you just wasted ten minutes of mine."
Elena swallowed hard, holding her ground despite the terror clawing at her throat. "It won't happen again, Mr. Moretti. I have the updated logistics reports for the shipping docks."
Dante stood up slowly, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke charcoal suit. He walked around the desk, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides.
He stopped inches away, towering over her. His eyes narrowed, dropping down from her face to her shoulders, and then lower—following the line of her trench coat all the way down to her heels.

Suddenly, Dante froze. His gaze locked onto the tip of her left stiletto pump.
A dark, drying smear of crimson blood stained the leather heel.
