Chapter 5 - The Broken Braids

When the garden gate clicked shut for the final time, the heavy tension that had gripped the estate for months dissolved into the afternoon breeze.

I stood by the rose bushes, looking down at the scattered silver strands on the ground. A sudden wave of exhaustion washed over me, and my shoulders trembled.

Daniel walked over to me, dropping his suitcase onto the grass. He fell to his knees beside my chair, wrapping his arms around my waist and burying his face into the fabric of my dress.

"Mom..." Daniel wept, his shoulders shaking with raw grief and remorse. "I am so sorry. God, I was so blind. I was so exhausted with work that I let that monster into our home... I let her disrespect Dad's memory... I let her hurt you."

I placed my hands gently onto my son's head, smoothing his dark hair just as I had when he was a boy.

"You were trying to build a future, Daniel," I whispered softly, tears finally trickling down my cheeks. "A good man wants to believe the best in the woman he loves. You aren't to blame for her deceit."

"I should have protected you, Mom," he choked out, looking up at my uneven, cut hair with heartbreak in his eyes.

"Hair grows back, sweetheart," I smiled through my tears, gently wiping his face with a linen handkerchief. "Honor and truth do not. And today, you protected this family."

Daniel stood up, carefully collecting every fallen silver strand from the roses and placing them into a small wooden box from the conservatory table.

"Come inside, Mom," Daniel said, taking my arm with gentle reverence. "Let's call Sarah."
