Chapter 2 - The Falling Mask

The silence that blanketed the garden was so absolute you could hear the rustle of leaves against the glass conservatory.

Daniel stood completely motionless under the white floral arch. For four months, Daniel had been working seventy-hour weeks running his enterprise software firm, desperately trying to balance his grueling corporate schedule while keeping the peace between his fiancée and his mother. Vanessa had spent every evening filling his head with fabricated tales of my "deteriorating memory" and "hostile outbursts."

Now, the reality was stripped bare before him.

Vanessa, noticing Chloe’s frozen stance, finally lowered her phone. She turned around with an easy, practiced smile, expecting to see a landscaper or a catering assistant.

When her eyes locked onto Daniel, the shears slipped from her manicured fingers, clattering loudly against the stone tiles.

"Daniel...?" Vanessa gasped, her voice instantly pitching into a sweet, innocent flutter. "Sweetheart! You're back from New York three days early!"

Daniel did not drop his suitcase. He didn't smile. He took three slow, deliberate strides across the flagstones, his boots stepping right through the fallen strands of my hair.

"What are you doing, Vanessa?" Daniel asked. His voice was dangerously quiet, a tone he only used in boardrooms before terminating a corrupt partner.

Vanessa stepped between Daniel and my chair, her hands fluttering defensively over her chest. "Daniel, please don't be upset! Your mother was having a moment of emotional distress... she insisted she wanted to cut her hair to look younger for our wedding pictures, and I was just helping her trim it! Chloe and I were trying to cheer her up!"

Chloe nodded frantically from the rose archway, hiding her champagne glass behind her back. "Yes! Exactly! It was just a sweet bonding makeover!"

I remained seated in the carved armchair, my posture regal, looking up at my son with calm, unblinking clarity.

"Daniel," I said softly, my voice carrying clear and steady across the terrace. "Look at the table."
