Chapter 1 - The Shears in the Rose Garden

The morning air smelled faintly of damp earth and heirloom English tea roses, a fragrance that had brought me comfort for thirty-eight years in the backyard of the estate my late husband, Thomas, and I built from the ground up. But on this cool Friday morning, the sharp, cold click of steel shears sliced through the serenity.
I sat upright in the antique carved armchair on the flagstone garden patio, dressed in an intricate midnight-blue gown embroidered with silver crystal beading. My hands rested serenely in my lap, displaying the sapphire ring Thomas had placed on my finger decades ago.
Behind me stood Vanessa, my son Daniel’s twenty-six-year-old fiancée. Dressed in an ivory silk high-neck blouse and beaded satin skirt, she held my waist-length silver hair in one hand and heavy tailoring shears in the other. In front of her, she held up her smartphone, recording my face with a cruel, mocking smirk.
"Shorter, Chloe," Vanessa said with a low laugh to her younger sister, who stood near the floral archway sipping vintage champagne in a pink dress. "She looks like an old village widow in every single family photograph. We simply cannot have someone looking like a relic at our high-society wedding."
A thick lock of my silver hair fell softly to the stone path, mingling with pink rose petals.
For thirty-eight years, I had kept my hair long because Thomas used to lovingly brush and braid it each evening, even when chemotherapy weakened his fingers before he passed away. Vanessa knew the emotional weight behind my hair; she had watched me brush it beside Thomas's portrait twice. That was precisely why she chose it as her instrument of humiliation.
"Smile for the camera, Evelyn," Chloe giggled, pointing her phone from the rose trellis. "This will be the highlight of the bridal shower montage!"
"You'll tell Daniel you wanted a chic, modern makeover for the ceremony," Vanessa whispered into my ear, her breath smelling of mint and arrogance. "And if you dare say a word, I'll tell him you lost your temper and attacked me in the garden. Who do you think he will believe? His grieving, unstable mother... or the woman carrying his future?"
Vanessa tapped her flat stomach with a self-satisfied grin.
I kept my chin raised and met her gaze through the phone screen. Vanessa didn't know that three days ago, I had found an itemized clinic receipt in my study showing a contraceptive implant procedure—not prenatal care. Nor did she know that the newly installed 4K security cameras nestled behind the black conservatory window trim were fully functional and streaming live.
Then, the iron garden gate clicked open.
Chloe’s laughter died instantly in her throat, her champagne flute trembling in her hand.
Vanessa, focused on filming her triumph, didn't notice the sudden shift in the air.

Beneath the blooming white rose archway stood my son, Daniel. Dressed in a sharp navy three-piece suit, holding his leather travel bag, his eyes were fixed on the silver hair scattered across the stone tiles.
Every drop of color had drained from his face.
