Chapter 3 - The Unseen Lens

Daniel turned his gaze toward the small mahogany side table beside my chair.
Resting next to my crystal water glass was my tablet. The screen was illuminated, displaying the high-definition security feed from the conservatory camera. The audio meter on the screen was pulsing in bright green, recording every second of Vanessa's threats, her laughter, and her false pregnancy claims in crystal-clear digital sound.
"The cameras..." Vanessa stammered, her face turning as pale as her silk blouse. "You... you told me the security system was offline for rewiring!"
"I told you the living room cameras were offline," I replied, standing up slowly from my chair and smoothing down my midnight-blue gown. "I never said anything about the garden."
Daniel walked past Vanessa without brushing against her sleeve. He picked up the tablet, his thumb rewinding the video by ninety seconds.
The garden air filled with the recorded playback:
“...You old-fashioned woman. Daniel will never believe you... Who do you think he’ll choose? His sad old mother or the woman carrying his future?...”
Daniel listened to every single word. His knuckles turned white around the tablet’s aluminum frame, a muscle ticking violently along his jawline.
He set the tablet back down and turned to face Vanessa.
"You told me my mother was losing her mind," Daniel said, his voice shaking with profound betrayal. "You told me she stole your grandmother's diamond brooch. You begged me to transfer the estate deed into your name so she wouldn't 'ruin our family stability.'"
"Daniel, it was just wedding stress!" Vanessa pleaded, tears of panic finally breaking through her makeup as she reached for his lapels. "I love you! I'm pregnant with your child! You can't let her tear us apart over a misunderstanding!"
"You're not pregnant, Vanessa," I said quietly, pulling a folded medical statement from my evening clutch and handing it to Daniel. "You had an intra-uterine contraceptive device inserted at the Oakridge Women's Clinic two weeks ago."

Daniel scanned the document, then looked up at Vanessa with cold, unvarnished disgust.
"Get off my mother's property," Daniel commanded.
