Chapter 7 - WHEN SHE FINALLY CHOSE HIMAvery begins building evidence against her father.
Luca gives her complete control over the investigation.
Their trust grows.
One evening, Avery tells Luca that she doesn't know who she is anymore.
He tells her:
"Maybe that's the point."
She asks what he means.
"You spent your whole life being someone's daughter, someone's fiancée, someone's perfect bride."
He looks at her.
"Maybe now you get to be Avery."
She kisses him.
For the first time, Luca doesn't pull away.
Their relationship finally becomes real.
But Luca immediately makes one thing clear:
"I won't ever own you."
Avery answers:
"Good. Because I'm not looking for another cage."
The next morning, Avery receives an anonymous message.
I KNOW WHAT YOUR MOTHER DID.
Attached is a photograph of Avery's mother holding a baby.
Avery doesn't recognize the child.
Then another message arrives:
ASK LUCA WHO HIS SISTER REALLY IS.
Avery looks at Luca.

His expression tells her he knows exactly what the photograph means.
