Chapter 13 - THE FATHER SHE COULDN'T FORGIVEAvery visits Richard.
He apologizes.
For the first time, he doesn't defend himself.
He admits that he destroyed his marriage.
He destroyed Avery's childhood.
He turned his daughter into a business asset.
He tells Avery:
"I thought money would protect you."
Avery answers:
"It never did."
Richard cries.
He gives Avery one final document.
It contains ownership of a small foundation her mother created before she died.
The foundation provides housing and scholarships for women escaping controlling relationships.
Richard says:
"Your mother wanted this to be yours."
Avery accepts it.
But she doesn't tell him everything is forgiven.
She simply says:
"I hope you die knowing I became someone you couldn't control."
Richard smiles through tears.
"That's all I ever wanted."
Avery leaves the hospital crying.
Outside, Luca waits.
He doesn't ask what happened.
He simply opens his arms.
