Chapter 2 - THE MAN WITH NO QUESTIONSLuca takes Avery to a secluded Moretti property outside the city.
Avery is terrified.
She expects locked doors, armed guards, and demands.
Instead, Luca gives her a guest room and tells her she can leave whenever she wants.
He even leaves the bedroom door unlocked.
That confuses her more than anything.
Avery discovers that Luca has already learned who she is.
She asks why he helped her.
He tells her:
"Because you were running like someone who had no one left to trust."
Avery refuses to explain everything.
Meanwhile, Richard Bennett, Avery's father, launches a massive search.
The newspapers report that the bride disappeared minutes before her wedding.
Caleb publicly pretends to be devastated.
Privately, he becomes furious.
He tells Avery's father:
"Bring her back."
Richard replies:
"She'll come back when she realizes she has nowhere else to go."
But Caleb knows something Richard doesn't.
Avery witnessed a conversation she was never supposed to hear.
She knows about money being transferred between Caleb's company and several offshore accounts.
She also knows her father's company is in serious financial trouble.
Avery begins to suspect her wedding was never about love.
It was about covering something much darker.
At the Moretti estate, Avery sees Luca treating one of his employees with unexpected kindness.
She realizes the rumors about him aren't completely accurate.
That night, she asks:
"Are you really a mafia boss?"
Luca doesn't deny it.
"Yes."
Avery takes a step backward.
Luca immediately says:
"You can leave."
She asks:
"Just like that?"
"Just like that."
She looks at the open door.
But instead of leaving, she closes it.
