Chapter 14 - The Ghost in the Loop|

By four o'clock that afternoon, the board meeting had concluded, and the directors had scrambled out of the office to implement Isa's new directives.

Isa sat behind a sleek new marble desk in her private corner office on the forty-second floor, reviewing financial manifests on her laptop.

Her desk phone chimed softly.

She pressed the speaker button. "Yes, Marcus?"

"Miss Voss," Marcus's dry voice came through the speaker. "There is a visitor downstairs in the main lobby requesting to see you. He doesn't have an appointment."

Isa frowned slightly. "Who is it?"

"A Mr. Tyler Cain."

Isa's fingers froze over her keyboard. A sudden, cold spike of adrenaline shot through her stomach, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Before she could speak, the intercom chimed again, and Rhett's deep voice cut through the line from his office upstairs.

"Marcus," Rhett commanded flatly. "Tell security to throw him onto the street."

"Wait, Rhett," Isa said quickly into the intercom.

A short silence followed on the line before Rhett spoke again, his tone dark and protective. "Isa. You don't need to see that filth."

"I want to see him, Rhett," Isa said, her voice turning firm and absolute. "Send him up, Marcus. To my office."

Two minutes later, the glass doors of her private office slid open.

Tyler Cain stepped inside.

Isa almost didn't recognize him.

The arrogant, handsome financial trader she had dated for eight months was completely gone. Tyler looked thin, hollow, and pale. His right hand was wrapped in thick white medical bandages, held in a dark sling against his chest. His expensive suit was crumpled, his eyes bloodshot and filled with pure, pathetic terror.

He didn't step close to her desk. He stood near the door, shaking violently.
