Chapter 6 - The Blood on the Desk|

Matteo let out a horrific, guttural scream as the metal pen pierced completely through his palm, anchoring him to the wood.

In the same split second, Silas ducked beneath the desk line as the two tactical shooters erupted into gunfire, sweeping the office with suppressed rounds that shattered the bookshelves and broke the floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind the desk.

Freezing sleet and howling wind burst into the room.

Silas didn't fire a gun.

He reached beneath the desk and pulled a heavy mechanical lever—the emergency safety override designed specifically for his penthouse.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

Heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the broken windows, sealing the study into an absolute kill-box.

On the security monitor inside the panic room, I covered my mouth with both hands, my heart beating so fast I could barely breathe.

Silas rose from behind the desk like a ghost. He moved with a brutal, terrifying efficiency that I had never seen before. He grabbed the barrel of the first shooter's submachine gun, twisting the man's arm until the joint snapped with a sickening crunch, then drove his tactical blade directly through the guard's neck.

The second shooter tried to clear his jam, but Silas slammed him backward into the stone fireplace, crushing his skull against the marble mantle.

Within twelve seconds, both guards were dead on the floorboards.

Matteo was still screaming, sobbing hysterically as he tried to pull his bloody hand free from the desk.

Elena Castiglione was pressed against the iron shutters, her fur coat stained with shattered glass and blood, her face pale as snow, all her regal arrogance completely gone.

Silas wiped his bloody blade on his trouser leg, then walked slowly toward her.

"You brought a wedding veil to my house, Elena," Silas said softly, grabbing her by her throat and slamming her against the wall. "Now tell me... who gave you the keys to my elevator?"
