Chapter 12 - The Price of Loyalty|

Silas stepped out into the freezing storm, Victor and eight heavily armed Valente soldiers fanning out behind him like shadows in the blowing snow.

The guards around the jet instantly raised their weapons, the sharp sound of tactical bolts clicking open echoing over the roar of the airplane engines.

"Hold your fire!" Arthur Lynwood’s booming voice cut through the storm.

My father stepped forward, leaning on his silver cane, staring at Silas through the driving sleet. He didn't look surprised to see my husband alive; he looked mildly annoyed.

"Silas," Arthur called out, his voice smooth and commanding. "I expected Elena to bring me my daughter. I see you’ve brought yourself instead."

"Elena is tied up in my dining room with a bullet in her underboss," Silas replied, walking steadily across the tarmac until he stood twenty feet from my father. "And you’re standing on my land, Arthur."

Arthur chuckled softly, a cold sound that vanished into the howling wind.

"Your land?" Arthur mocked, gesturing toward the dark city skyline behind them. "You lost Chicago three hours ago, Silas. The Castigliones own your docks. The Commission has stripped your title. You are a dead man walking."

"I don't care about the Commission," Silas said coldly. "And I don't care about Chicago."

Arthur frowned slightly. "Then why are you here?"

Silas raised his sidearm, pointing the dark barrel directly at my father's heart.

"I came for the man who tried to take my wife."
