Chapter 14 - The Confrontation|

The rear door of the SUV slid open with a heavy mechanical click.

Silas threw my father onto the leather floorboards at my feet.

Arthur groaned, pushing himself up onto his elbows, his expensive coat covered in gray slush and blood. He looked up, his eyes widening as he saw me sitting in the back seat, holding my six-month belly.

"Clara," my father rasped out, trying to smooth his white hair. "Clara, thank God! Tell your husband to put his gun away! I did this for you, girl! I came to save you from this monster!"

I looked down at my father.

For twenty-four years, I had feared this man. He had controlled every aspect of my life—what I wore, where I went, who I spoke to—until he traded me to Silas like a piece of livestock to settle a debt.

"You didn't come to save me, Papa," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "You came to collect your property before the Castigliones destroyed it."

Arthur’s face twisted in anger. "You ungrateful little brat! I built an empire for you! I gave you the Lynwood name!"

"And you tried to murder my husband tonight," I replied softly.

Silas stepped up to the open door, placing his heavy hand on my shoulder, looking down at Arthur like a judge preparing to pass sentence.

"What do you want me to do with him, Clara?" Silas asked gently.

My father looked between us, horror dawning on his face as he realized that his fate didn't rest with the feared mafia boss standing in the doorway.

It rested entirely with the pregnant daughter he had spent his life stepping on.
