Chapter 10 - The Tunnel of Ashes|

The industrial elevator descended in near-total darkness, the rusty steel cables groaning as we dropped sixty stories into the bowels of Chicago.
Silas kept one arm wrapped tightly around my waist, shielding my body with his own, his other hand resting on his sidearm.
When the elevator doors finally scraped open, we stepped into a vast, damp concrete tunnel lit only by emergency orange lanterns.
Waiting in the shadows were four matte-black armored SUVs, their engines idling quietly in the cold air.
A tall, broad man with a scarred face stepped out from the lead vehicle, holding a heavy rifle.
It was Victor—Silas’s true personal bodyguard, a man who had gone underground two weeks ago when the dock blockade began.
"Boss," Victor greeted, bowing his head slightly. "Mrs. Vance. The convoy is prepped. The freight rail path to Midway is clear."
"Is my father-in-law still at the hangar?" Silas asked, helping me into the reinforced back seat of the second SUV.
"Arthur Lynwood is sitting in his private jet on the tarmac," Victor reported grimly. "He’s got twenty men on the perimeter and two armored cars blocking the main runway. He expects Elena to bring Mrs. Vance to him within the hour."

Silas climbed into the seat beside me, slamming the heavy armored door shut.
"He thinks he’s picking up a broken daughter," Silas said, looking out the tinted window as the convoy began moving down the dark tunnel. "Let's show him what happens when he touches my blood."
