Chapter 15 - The Judgment|

The storm raged around the SUV, heavy snow piling up against the tires as the silence stretched inside the vehicle.

I looked at my father’s terrified face, then down at my hand resting over my unborn son.

"He stays in Chicago," I said quietly.

Arthur blinked, confused. "What?"

"You wanted Chicago so badly, Papa?" I said, looking him dead in the eye. "You can have it. The Castigliones will be at the penthouse in thirty minutes. They’ll be looking for the man who betrayed them. And they’ll find you."

Arthur’s eyes went wide as saucers with pure terror. "Clara! No! They’ll slaughter me! You can't leave me here with them!"

Silas let out a dark, satisfied chuckle.

He reached down, grabbed my father by his collar, and yanked him backward out of the vehicle, slamming him onto the icy tarmac.

"You heard my wife," Silas said, stepping into the SUV and slamming the heavy armored door shut. "Enjoy your new city, Arthur."

Victor climbed into the driver’s seat, slamming the vehicle into gear and turning the convoy around, leaving my screaming father kneeling alone in the snow on the empty runway.

As we sped away from Midway Airport into the dark, blinding blizzard, Silas pulled me against his side, wrapping his heavy coat over my shoulders.

"Where are we going now?" I asked, resting my head against his chest.

Silas looked out the dark window toward the open highway leading south.

"Somewhere no one will ever find us," he whispered.
