Chapter 5 - The InjunctionArthur Vance stepped forward again, holding out a stack of legal documents stamped with the official seal of the State District Court.

“Richard Mercer,” Vance announced, “as of six o'clock this morning, a temporary restraining order has been issued freezing all personal and corporate assets associated with the Mercer family trust.”
My father’s eyes bulged. “All assets? You can’t freeze my personal accounts!”
“We can, and we have,” Vance replied evenly. “Because your personal accounts were used as personal guarantees for the forty-million-dollar mezzanine loan provided by Blackwood Capital. Since the financial statements you submitted to secure that loan contained material misrepresentations—specifically inflated purchase orders—the loan is now in immediate default.”
“This is my home! My company!” my father roared, his composure completely shattering. He lunged toward Vance, but two security guards from Adrian’s detail stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with impenetrable stone postures.
“The Mercer Manufacturing headquarters was secured by our bailiffs twenty minutes ago,” Vance continued without breaking stride. “The servers have been mirrored, the physical files impounded, and the accounting department is currently under the supervision of federal forensic auditors.”

My mother collapsed onto a plush velvet chair near the aisle, sobbing hysterically. “Our home... the estate in Greenwich? The horses?”
“Encumbered,” Vance said simply. “Pending asset forfeiture analysis.”
