Chapter 19 - The SentencingTwo months later, the court reconvened for sentencing. The federal judge, a stern magistrate known for his zero-tolerance stance on corporate crime, delivered a scathing speech from the bench.

“This was not a case of a struggling business making a desperate mistake,” the judge stated, his voice echoing through the quiet chamber. “This was a systematic, arrogant, and predatory fraud carried out over years by individuals who believed their wealth and social standing placed them above the law. You destroyed the career of a brilliant young woman, lied to federal regulators, and put the livelihoods of hundreds of workers at risk to fund an opulent lifestyle.”
He turned to my father. “Richard Mercer, on counts one through eight, I sentence you to eighteen years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole, followed by three years of supervised release. You are further ordered to pay thirty-two million dollars in restitution.”
My father didn't react. He looked hollow, completely drained of life.
The judge then turned to my sister. “Vanessa Mercer, for your active participation in the falsification of system records and financial documents, I sentence you to ten years in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release.”

Vanessa burst into wild, hysterical sobs as the US Marshals stepped forward to place the heavy iron chains around her waist and wrists. “Claire! Help me! Please! Ten years! I’ll die in there!”
The guards led them away through the heavy side door that led to the holding cells. The heavy steel door clicked shut, ending the era of the Mercer family forever.
