Chapter 2 - Rising Above the WheelchairBeside me, the metal mechanism of Adrian’s wheelchair clicked. The sound was distinct, sharp, and deliberate.

My father snapped his gaze down toward Adrian, attempting to regain his dominant footing. “You! Did you set this up? Did you invite these people to humiliate us?”

Adrian didn't answer with words. Instead, he unclipped the safety harness across his waist. He placed both palms flat on the padded armrests.

A collective gasp rippled through the front row of guests.

With smooth, effortless strength, Adrian pushed himself up. He didn't struggle. He didn't wobble. He stood upright, revealing his imposing six-foot-two frame that towered over my father. He adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo, smooth and completely unhurried, as the room fell into a stunned, absolute silence.

Vanessa took an involuntary step back, her mouth hanging open. My mother clutched her pearl necklace so tightly the string looked ready to snap.

“Your legs...” my father stammered, pointing a trembling finger. “You’re... you were paralyzed!”

“I was injured,” Adrian said, his voice deep, quiet, and possessing a commanding weight that made the previous mockery look pathetic. “Three years ago. A spinal concussion from a climbing accident in the Alps. Recovery required two years of intensive physical therapy and six months of unannounced rest. The wheelchair was a temporary aid during my final stage of nerve rehabilitation—and a very useful filter for human character.”

He turned to look at my father, his gaze piercingly clear. “You thought I was weak, Richard. You thought I was a broken man you could manipulate to bail out your sinking company. But I was never your mark. You were mine.”
