Chapter 16 - The Paper TrailFor three hours, I sat on the witness stand explaining the intricate mechanics of corporate financial fraud.

Mr. Marcus pulled up digital exhibits on the large monitors mounted throughout the courtroom. I walked the jury through hundreds of lines of source code, pointing out the specific manual overrides that Vanessa had entered to hide inventory shortfalls.
“Dr. Sterling,” Mr. Marcus asked, pointing to Exhibit 42—a series of internal emails dated three years prior. “Can you explain what happened on March 14th?”
“On March 14th,” I testified, “I discovered a gap of twelve million dollars between our physical inventory reports and the collateral declarations submitted to First National Bank for a commercial loan. I generated a fraud exception report and presented it directly to CEO Richard Mercer in his private office.”
“And what was his reaction?”
“He threw the report on the floor,” I recalled with absolute clarity. “He told me that I was an analyst, that I needed to stay in my lane, and that if I mentioned the discrepancies to the external auditors, he would ensure I never worked in the technology or financial sectors again.”
A murmur broke out among the jurors. Two of them were taking rapid notes.
“And what happened three weeks later?” Mr. Marcus continued.
“Vanessa Mercer filed a formal human resources complaint against me, alleging I had compromised company data security. My security badge was revoked, my personal belongings were confiscated, and I was terminated without severance.”
“Did you receive any assistance from the executive team after your termination?”
“No,” I said calmly. “My parents informed our extended family and professional network that I had suffered a mental breakdown and was unable to work.”

In the defense chair, Vanessa slammed her hands against the table. “She’s lying! She was crazy! She tried to sabotage my department!”
The judge slammed his gavel down with a deafening crack. “Silence in the courtroom! Ms. Mercer, one more outburst and I will have you remanded to a holding cell for the remainder of this session!”
