Chapter 1 - The Twelve Men in Dark SuitsThe heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom swung wide, their thud echoing against the high vaulted ceilings. The chatter of two hundred guests died instantly as twelve men and women in tailored charcoal suits entered in a precise, silent formation. They moved not like wedding guests, but like auditors entering a vault.

Leading the group was Arthur Vance, a senior managing partner at Blackwood Capital—the largest private equity firm on the East Coast. My father’s champagne glass hovered halfway to his lips, his smirk freezing into a jagged line. He recognized Vance. Every corporate director in the state knew Vance.

“Mr. Mercer,” Vance said, his voice clipped and resonant enough to fill the entire room. “I apologize for interrupting the festivities. However, as the lead representative of the bondholders of Mercer Manufacturing, urgent action was required.”

My father forced a laugh, though his posture stiffened. “Arthur! You could have called my secretary. This is my daughter’s wedding. We are celebrating.”

“We are not here to celebrate,” Vance replied coldly, signaling to a young woman beside him holding a thick leather binder. “We are here to enforce the debt covenants triggered thirty minutes ago.”

Vanessa stepped forward, her silk dress rustling loudly in the quiet room. “This is outrageous! You can’t just storm into a private event. My father is the CEO—”

“Your father is currently the subject of an emergency board resolution,” Vance interrupted without looking at her. “And as of four o’clock this afternoon, Blackwood Capital has exercised its right to take control of all voting shares pledged as collateral.”

My mother’s face drained of color. She looked at my father, her jeweled hand dropping from her lips to grab his arm. “Richard... what is he talking about?”

My father didn't answer. His eyes were locked on the twelve executives, searching for a face he could influence. But there was no warmth in that line of dark suits. Only numbers.
