Chapter 28 - The Park OpeningOn a golden autumn afternoon, we held the grand opening of the Vance-Sterling Nature Preserve on the grounds of the former Mercer estate.

Hundreds of families from the surrounding towns gathered on the manicured lawns. Children were running through the leaf piles, dogs were playing near the newly constructed pond, and elderly couples walked along the paved stone paths.
Where the grand mansion had once stood, there was now a wide, sunlit meadow filled with wildflowers and native trees. In the center of the meadow sat a bronze plaque mounted on a granite boulder.
It read simply:
DEDICATED TO THOSE WHO WERE TOLD THEY WERE TOO SMALL, TOO QUIET, OR TOO BROKEN. MAY YOU FIND YOUR STRENGTH IN THE OPEN AIR.
I stood near the boulder, holding two-year-old Eleanor in my arms, while Adrian stood beside me, his arm around my shoulders.
A group of local children ran past us, laughing as they flew a brightly colored kite into the clear blue sky.
May you like
“It’s beautiful, isn't it?” Adrian said softly.
“It’s peaceful,” I replied, leaning my head against his shoulder. “That’s better than beautiful.”
