Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Other SideThe surgery lasted seven gruelling hours.

In the high-tech operating room, doctors worked under intense microscopic lights, carefully separating the delicate brain tissue from the arterial tumor. Outside in the waiting room, Lily sat gripping a wooden rosary, while Noah sat beside her, refusing to leave for his meeting with Sam until he knew Vivian was stable.
At two in the afternoon, Dr. Vance emerged through the double doors, pulling off his surgical mask.
Lily stood up instantly. “Doctor? How is my daughter?”
Dr. Vance smiled warmly. “The tumor was benign and successfully removed without damaging her speech or motor centers. She is in recovery right now, resting comfortably.”
Lily burst into tears of pure joy, collapsing against Noah, who let out a long, breathless sigh of relief.
With Vivian safely out of danger, Noah knew he had to keep his promise. He rode the subway across town to a quiet public park near Sam’s school. Sitting on a wooden bench under the autumn trees, Noah’s heart pounded violently in his chest.
Footsteps sounded on the gravel path. Noah looked up to see a twelve-year-old boy with dark hair, wearing a slightly oversized denim jacket, standing a few feet away. It was Sam.
“Hey, Dad,” the boy said, his voice cautious, guarded, and laced with years of hurt.
Noah stood up slowly, fighting the urge to rush forward. “Hey, Sam. Thank you for coming.”
They sat together on the bench in heavy silence. Noah didn't offer cheap excuses or empty promises. Instead, he spoke with the absolute honesty he had learned at Table Seven.
“I failed you, Sam,” Noah said, his voice tight with raw emotion. “When your mom died, I drowned in my own pain and left you to carry yours alone. I thought staying away would hurt you less... but I was a coward. I’m so sorry.”

Sam looked down at his sneakers, tears welling in his eyes. “I don't need a perfect dad, Noah... I just needed you to show up.”
“I’m showing up now,” Noah said, his eyes filled with devotion. “For as long as you’ll let me.”
