Chapter 3 - The Call Before SunriseThe weight of Noah’s words settled over Vivian like a heavy blanket. Sitting in that neon-lit booth, watching rain streak down the glass, she realized the terrifying truth: her obsession with protecting her mother from pain was actually an act of cowardice.

Her phone buzzed relentlessly on the table. Messages from her ruthless Chief Operating Officer, Ethan Caldwell, demanded an emergency late-night board call to address dropping stock prices. But beneath his messages was a missed call from Mom.
Vivian’s hand trembled as she picked up the phone. She looked across the table at Noah, who gave her a quiet, encouraging nod.
She dialed.
“Vivian?” her mother’s voice came through the speaker, warm yet laced with instant maternal concern. “Sweetheart, why are you calling at three in the morning? Is everything all right?”
Tears welled up in Vivian’s eyes, breaking through years of stoic corporate armor. “Mom... I need to tell you something. I’m at Mass General. I’m having surgery in four hours.”
On the other end of the line, Lily Hart gasped, but within seconds, the panic surrendered to unconditional love. “I’m catching the first train, Vivian. Don't you dare go into that operating room without holding my hand.”
When Vivian hung up, a profound sense of relief washed over her. She looked at Noah, her eyes bright with tears. “Thank you. If you hadn't pushed me, I would have walked into that hospital completely alone.”
Noah smiled, a genuine, warm expression that softened his tired features. “Nobody should face the dark alone, Vivian.”

Suddenly, Noah’s own phone chimed. It was a text from his son’s legal guardian: Sam saw you outside his school today. He said if you’re still in town, he wants to talk.
Vivian reached across the table, gently touching Noah’s rough hand. “It looks like it’s your turn not to run away.”
