Chapter 2 - What Absence Leaves BehindAs the storm raged outside, the tense quiet between them was broken by a sudden commotion in the neighboring booth. A woman in her nineties with a hospital wristband stood up, recognizing Vivian from corporate news broadcasts.

“You’re Vivian Hart,” the woman said, her voice shaking with bitter anger. “The CEO of Hartwell Biotech. You sit there in your rich coat while families like mine go bankrupt trying to pay for cancer medication!”

The diner went dead silent. Heads turned across the checkered floor. Vivian stiffened, her fingers locking around her spoon. She had spent years giving polished boardroom speeches about research costs and regulatory hurdles, but face-to-face with raw human grief, her corporate answers felt hollow.

Noah set his coffee mug down calmly. “Ma’am,” he spoke up gently, deflecting the woman’s rage. “She might deserve every tough question you have tomorrow in public. But tonight, nobody deserves to be put on trial over a bowl of soup.”

The woman hesitated, startled by Noah’s quiet authority, before slowly sitting back down.

Grateful yet disarmed, Vivian cut her slice of apple pie in half and pushed it across the laminate table toward Noah. “Since you appointed yourself my defense attorney, you might as well eat.”

Over shared pie, Noah revealed his own hidden wounds. He spoke of the small restaurant he lost, his struggle with grief after his ex-wife’s death, and his estranged twelve-year-old son, Sam, who lived in the city but refused to see him.

“I thought staying away was kinder,” Noah admitted, staring into his black coffee. “I thought if I stopped showing up, he’d stop being disappointed. But absence isn't a gift. It’s just another kind of wound.”

His words pierced Vivian’s heart. Reaching into her pocket for a handkerchief, the white envelope accidentally slipped out and landed on the floor between them. Noah caught a glimpse of the bold handwriting before Vivian snatched it back: For Mom, if I don’t wake up.

“You’re preparing to leave without saying goodbye,” Noah said softly, looking her dead in the eye. “Don't make my mistake, Vivian. The calls you don't make are the ones that haunt you forever.”
