BEFORE THE SURGEON'S BLADE / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Into the Dark Quiet“I am not signing anything, Ethan,” Vivian said firmly, her voice steady despite the IV needle in her arm. “Hartwell Biotech was built to heal people, not to bleed patients dry for dividend checks.”

“If you go into that operating room without handing over control, the board will oust you by noon!” Ethan warned, his face twisting with corporate greed. “You’re risking your entire legacy!”

Before Ethan could step closer, Noah moved from the corner of the room, stepping directly between Ethan and the hospital bed. His taller, broad frame completely blocked the executive.

“She gave you her answer,” Noah said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding tone that carried absolute authority. “And right now, this is a patient’s room, not a boardroom. Get out before I call hospital security.”

Ethan glared at Noah’s worn coat with contempt. “Who the hell are you?”

“He’s with us,” Lily said defensively, standing beside Noah. “Leave my daughter alone!”

Recognizing he was outnumbered, Ethan snatched his tablet off the table. “You’re making a fatal mistake, Vivian. When you wake up—if you wake up—you won't have a company left.” He turned on his heel and slammed the door behind him.

Minutes later, the surgical team entered the room. Dr. Vance, the lead neurosurgeon, checked Vivian’s vitals and signaled that it was time.

Lily held Vivian’s right hand tightly, while Noah held her left.

“I’ll be waiting right here when you open your eyes, my sweet girl,” Lily promised, tears streaming down her face.

Vivian turned her head toward Noah. “Go see your son, Noah. Promise me you won't give up on him.”

“I promise,” Noah whispered, squeezing her fingers gently. “And you promise me you’ll wake up so we can finish that apple pie.”

As the gurney was wheeled down the long, bright corridor toward the operating theater, the heavy doors closed, plunging Vivian into the quiet, dark abyss of anesthesia.
