Chapter 5 - The Shadow at the CurbI turned slowly to look at Samantha.

âHow did you get this flash drive?â I asked, my voice dropping into a low, lethal register.
âI heard him talking on his balcony last night,â Samantha wept softly, pulling the wool blanket closer around her shoulders. âHe was laughing about how easy it was to fool 'the dumb construction worker.' Thatâs when I realized what a monster he was.â
She wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice filled with deep, sickening shame.
âI waited until he fell asleep,â Samantha continued. âI copied his private drive onto this stick, stole his car keys, and ran out of his apartment barefoot. But his security guard saw me leave. Theyâve been tracking my phoneâs GPS ever since.â
At that exact moment, my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unknown private number.
I picked up the phone, tapping the speaker button. âReyes.â
Julianâs calm, mocking voice echoed through the quiet room, accompanied by the gentle patter of rain outside.
âHello, Daniel,â Julian drawled smoothly. âI see my runaway bride found her way back to your doorstep. Iâm sitting in the black car outside your house right now.â
âYouâre trespassing, Blackwood,â I said coldly.
âI don't care about trespassing, Daniel,â Julian chuckled darkly. âI want that flash drive. Samantha is an emotional idiot who doesn't understand corporate business. Hand over the drive, and Iâll make sure your divorce settlement includes two million dollars in cash.â
I looked down at the flash drive in my hand, then out the window at the idling black sedan.
May you like
âYou came to the wrong house, Julian,â I said softly. âAnd you picked the wrong man to cross.â
I hung up the phone.
