Chapter 4 - The Contents of the Flash DriveMy breath hitched in my chest.

I took the flash drive from her hand, walked over to my desk, and plugged it into my secure laptop.

Samantha huddled under the blanket on the floor beside my desk, her bare feet tucked beneath her, watching me with wide, fearful eyes.

I unlocked the flash drive using a decryption key Samantha had copied from Julian’s desk.

The screen illuminated with dozens of confidential PDF documents, audio recordings, and wire transfer receipts.

As I scrolled through the files, my blood turned to liquid ice.

Julian Blackwood wasn't just an arrogant investment banker. He was the secret partner in a shell company that had been bribing our sub-contractors to install sub-standard steel beams on the top ten floors of the Vance Tower project—a sixty-story skyscraper currently under construction downtown!

If those sub-standard beams were installed, the entire building would suffer catastrophic structural failure within two years, destroying my company, ruining my career, and potentially costing dozens of innocent lives.

Worst of all, the flash drive contained a recorded phone call between Julian and his lead investor:

“Don't worry about Daniel Reyes,” Julian’s voice sneered on the recording. “I’m sleeping with his wife. He’s so distracted by the marital drama that he won't inspect the load-bearing welds on floor forty. When the building fails, we buy his firm for pennies.”

I sat at my desk, my fists clenched so tightly my knuckles turned white.

Samantha hadn't just been an unfaithful wife. She had been used as a pawn in a corporate assassination plot designed to destroy everything I had built with my bare hands.
