Chapter 2 - The Upgrade MessageFor seventy-two hours, I lived in a blur of concrete, blue-prints, and quiet, agonizing silence.

I threw myself into managing a multi-million-dollar commercial skyscraper project downtown. I didn't answer Samanthaâs phone calls, blocked her social media accounts, and instructed my lawyer to handle every detail of the asset division. She could have the house. She could have the furniture. I wanted nothing that reminded me of her lie.
On the third night, a torrential thunderstorm raged across the city. Rain slammed against the windows of my ground-floor rental home, the wind howling through the trees.
At 11:30 PM, while I was sitting at my kitchen counter reviewing structural blueprints, a loud, frantic knocking rattled my front door.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
I grabbed a heavy flashlight from the drawer, walked to the hallway, and pulled the door open.
Standing on my porch, completely soaked by the freezing rain, was Samantha.
She wasn't wearing a coat. She wasn't wearing shoes. Her bare feet were dirty and bleeding slightly from running across gravel. Her dark hair hung in wet strands across her face, her body shaking so violently that her teeth chattered.
Clutched tightly in her trembling right hand was a small, black USB flash drive.
âDanny...â Samantha choked out, her voice breaking into a terrified sob. âPlease... please let me in. Heâs following me.â

I stood frozen on the threshold, my chest tightening with a volatile mix of residual anger and shock. âSamantha? What are you doing here? Where are your shoes?â
âJulian lied about everything, Danny!â she wept hysterically, collapsing onto her knees right at my doorstep. âHe didn't want me! He used me to get to you!â
