Chapter 3 - Barefoot at the DoorI stepped out onto the wet porch, looking past her into the dark street.

At the curb forty yards away, a black luxury sedan sat idling in the rain, its tinted windows dark, its headlights beaming directly toward my front door.

Samantha collapsed onto my entryway floor, weeping uncontrollably, clutching her wet arms around her shivering frame. I grabbed a dry wool blanket from the couch and threw it over her shoulders.
âWhy are you here, Samantha?â I asked coldly, standing over her with my arms crossed. âYou chose your upgrade. Go back to his penthouse.â
âThere was no upgrade, Danny!â Samantha sobbed, looking up at me with big, bloodshot eyes filled with genuine, paralyzing terror. âJulian didn't re-enter my life because he loved me! He re-entered my life because he knew you were the lead foreman on the Vance Tower development project!â
I frowned, a sharp chill running down my spine. âWhat does the Vance Tower have to do with Julian?â

Samantha held up the black flash drive, her hands shaking so hard she could barely keep her grip.
âJulian is three million dollars in debt to offshore investors,â Samantha confessed, her voice cracking. âHe used my laptop while I was in the shower two days ago. I found encrypted files he downloaded from your private work cloud server... files that prove his firm has been sabotaging your construction siteâs safety reports to force a hostile takeover of your company!â
