Chapter 56 - The Ghost in the System

By six o’clock that evening, the brownstone on Riverside had become a war room.
Pendelton had three secure laptops running on the dining room table, documents spread across the mahogany surface like a paper blizzard. Outside, the rain beat a steady, relentless tattoo against the reinforced glass.
Frank was stitched up and sitting in the corner with an iced compress on his shoulder, cleaning the cylinder of a .38 Special with steady, methodical strokes.
Sofia sat at the end of the long table, coloring quietly, her presence a silent reminder of the stakes. Carlo had sacrificed his life, his name, and his soul to keep this child and my mother alive in the shadows. I wasn't going to let his death be for nothing.
"Look at this," Pendelton said, tapping a screen showing the blueprint of the Foley Square municipal complex. "Marcus didn't just build a vault for the Treasury. He built an interlock with the city water distribution system."
I leaned over his shoulder. The digital rendering showed an underground pipeline running from the Catskill Aqueduct conduit beneath Manhattan directly adjacent to the concrete containment chamber where the Port Authority kept its classified development archives.
"What does that mean in plain English?" I asked.
"It means," Pendelton said, his fingers dancing across the keys, "that if the master scanner is inserted into the terminal at Pier 88 without the secondary bypass key from Box 104, it doesn't open the door. It floods the entire sub-level with four hundred thousand gallons of untreated river water from the Hudson intake."
I stared at the screen. My father hadn't designed a door. He had designed a dead-man’s trap.
"He knew Sterling would come for it eventually," I murmured. "He knew that if anyone ever forced my mother—or me—to turn that key, the only way to protect the evidence was to bury everyone in the room."
"Which means Sterling doesn't have the technical manual," Frank chimed in from the corner. "Sterling thinks all he needs is Sarah’s eyeball and the box. He has no idea the bypass exists."
"Where is the bypass?" I asked.
Frank pointed his cleaning rod at my chest. "In the back of your father’s surveyor notebook. The numerical sequence written under your mother's name."
I pulled the black notebook from my coat. Sure enough, beneath *Clara Carter Vance*, there was a seven-digit series of numbers: *44-12-809*.
"The coordinates for the water gate," Pendelton said, his voice breathless with awe. "Marcus left the safety catch in his daughter’s name. If you input the sequence before the retinal scan, the vault opens clean. If you don't... the river takes the pier."
"Then we have our leverage," I said.
Suddenly, the screen on Pendelton's center laptop went black.
The low hum of the generator in the carriage house dipped, the overhead chandelier flickering twice before dying completely. Emergency battery units clicked on throughout the brownstone, casting long, eerie shadows across the room in cold emergency LED blue.
"We lost perimeter feed," Pendelton said, his voice dropping into immediate alarm. "Someone just cut the fiber line from the street."
Frank stood up, his revolver clicking into full cock. "They didn't wait for Pier 88."
A soft thump sounded from the terrace above our heads—the distinct impact of a tactical boot hitting slate tile.
"Sofia, under the table," I whispered, my voice ice cold.
The little girl didn't cry. She had grown up in Carlo's fortress; she scrambled under the heavy mahogany table without making a sound, pulling her knees to her chest.
I reached down into the canvas satchel, pulled the heavy optical scanner out, and set it on the table. Beside it, I placed the steel crowbar I had carried from the ashes of my diner.
"They don't want to kill us yet," I said, stepping between the table and the tall French doors leading to the garden. "They need my eyes intact. Frank, Pendelton—stay behind the pillars. If anyone breaches that glass, aim for the knees."
May you like
The French doors shattered inward in an explosion of tempered glass and rain.
