Chapter 5 - The Breach

Dante’s body shifted instantly from grieving father to lethal predator. In a single fluid motion, he stepped past me, drew a heavy, matte-black firearm from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket, and planted his body between the bedroom door and the bed where Sophia lay sleeping.

“Stay down,” he commanded in a low, absolute hiss that brooked no argument.

The security monitor beside the door flickered to life, casting a pale blue glow across his shoulder. On the small screen, the feed from the ground-floor foyer showed the heavy oak front door hanging off its reinforced hinges.

Three figures in tactical black gear, faces obscured by dark balaclavas, were moving through the entryway with terrifying, military precision. They weren't common thugs or street enforcers; they moved like ghosts who knew every blind spot of the smart-home system.

“How did they bypass the locks?” I whispered, crouching near the edge of the bed where Sophia stirred, letting out a soft, frightened murmur.

“They didn't bypass them,” Dante murmured, his eyes locked on the hallway camera feed as the figures began ascending the grand staircase. “They had the override codes. Which means someone inside my inner circle didn't just sell us out—they opened the front door.”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. The cozy anonymity of my life as a waitress, the dreams of pastry flour and morning dough, felt like a lifetime away. I was standing in the epicenter of a war I didn't start, tethered to a family history I never knew I had.

On the screen, the tactical team reached the landing outside our door.

Dante didn't wait for them to knock. He raised his weapon, squared his stance, and aimed directly at the reinforced wooden panel of the bedroom door just as the heavy brass handle began to slowly, deliberately turn down.

“Elena,” Dante said without taking his eyes off the door, his voice unnervingly calm. “If I go down, take the hallway panic room key from my pocket. There’s a vehicle tunnel underneath. Don't look back.”

The handle clicked. The door began to swing open.

And then, the intercom speaker beside the door crackled to life, broadcasting a synthesized, distorted voice that froze Dante’s finger on the trigger:

“Put the gun down, Dante. We didn't come for you. We came for your wife’s niece.”
