Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Chain

I looked down at Sophia, who was still trembling on the oversized bed, and then across the room at Dante, whose bleeding temple and fierce, unwavering gaze told me everything I needed to know about what he was willing to sacrifice for us.

Then I looked back at Arthur Sterling—the man who had pretended to be my protector while slowly tightening a noose around my entire life.

“You think I have the key memorized?” I asked, my voice surprisingly steady as I took a slow step forward.

Arthur narrowed his eyes, sensing a shift in the air. “Don't play games, Elena. You’ve carried that legacy your whole life.”

“My father spent twenty years drinking himself to sleep because he thought my mother abandoned us,” I said, my voice rising, carrying a sharp, ringing clarity that echoed off the high walls. “And you sat in your plush Manhattan office writing checks to keep him quiet, laughing at how easily you manipulated two terrified people.”

Arthur’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold edge of impatience. “Enough games. Give me the code.”

“My mother didn't trust you,” I said, stopping just three feet away from him. “And she certainly didn't leave her legacy on a pendant for a corporate accountant to steal.”

Before Arthur could react, I didn't reach for my neck—I reached out and slammed my palm against the emergency panic alarm button hidden behind the decorative wooden molding next to the door.

A deafening, high-pitched klaxon shrieked through the townhouse, instantly flooding the hallways with blinding strobes of red emergency light.

Chaos erupted in a fraction of a second. The two operatives holding Dante were momentarily blinded by the strobe flash, and Dante exploded into action, driving his elbow into the nearest guard’s ribs and sending him crashing across the floor.

“Grab the girl!” Arthur shouted over the deafening alarm, lunging forward to grab my arm.

I twisted away, spinning out of his reach, but his fingers caught the fabric of my sleeve, tearing it as he yanked me backward. Before he could secure a grip, a heavy, dark shadow materialized beside us.

Dante crossed the room with terrifying speed, slamming his fist directly into Arthur’s jaw with a sickening crack. The older man stumbled backward, colliding hard against the nursery wall and sliding unconscious to the floor.

The remaining two operatives raised their rifles, but the heavy oak doors of the nursery blew inward with a massive crash as half a dozen armed security personnel—loyal exclusively to Dante—poured into the room, their weapons trained instantly on the intruders.

“Drop your weapons! Do it now!” the lead security officer bellowed.

The two operatives traded a single glance, dropped their rifles to the hardwood floor, and raised their hands in the air.

Within thirty seconds, the room was secured. The blinding red strobe lights continued to flash, casting long, dramatic shadows across the chaotic scene.

Dante didn't look at the prisoners. He didn't look at Arthur, who was already being hauled to his feet by the security team. He walked straight past the debris, knelt down beside the bed, and pulled Sophia into his arms, burying his face in her small shoulder as she finally let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief and wrapped her tiny arms tightly around his neck.

After a long moment, Dante stood up, holding his sleeping daughter with one arm, and walked over to where I stood near the door, my sleeve torn, my breath coming in ragged gasps.

He reached out with his free hand, gently touching my bruised arm, his gray eyes shining with an intensity that defied words.

“You saved us,” Dante whispered above the hum of the alarm.

“We’re not done yet,” I replied, looking down the hallway toward the stairs where Arthur’s men had brought Clara. “Arthur said she’s alive. We need to find your wife.”

Dante nodded slowly, a grim, unbreakable resolve settling over his features. “Then we find her together.”
