Chapter 17 - The Cell Beneath the Floor

Dante knocked the guard unconscious with a single blow of his rifle butt, then turned toward the reinforced vault door.
The door was made of four-inch-thick solid steel, equipped with a digital keypad and an analog biometric scanner from twenty years ago—the very system my father had installed before the plant was abandoned.
Beside the keypad, a reinforced glass viewport looked into the sterile, white-tiled cell within.
Sitting in a metal chair, her wrists bound by heavy zip-ties, was Clara Moretti. Her face was bruised, her blouse torn, but her posture remained straight, her dark eyes blazing with defiance. When she looked up and saw Dante’s silhouette through the glass, her eyes widened in shock—and then her gaze shifted to me.
Her expression shifted from disbelief to profound, heart-wrenching recognition.
"Dante," Clara’s voice filtered through the primitive intercom speaker mounted beside the door. "Dante, you shouldn't have come. It's a trap."
"I'm taking you home, Clara," Dante said, stepping up to the glass, his hand pressing against the reinforced pane. "Sophia is safe. The Citadel is locked down. We're getting you out."
"You don't understand," Clara whispered, her voice trembling through the static. "Croft isn't upstairs. He was never here tonight. He left two hours ago."
Dante froze. "What are you talking about?"
"The video you received was pre-recorded yesterday," Clara said, tears finally slipping down her bruised cheeks as she looked directly at me. "Victor Croft didn't want the ledger to steal the money, Sarah. He wanted the ledger because your father hidden the deed of succession inside the master trust. The deed that names the sole legal guardian of the entire Moretti-Vance consortium."
I stepped up to the intercom, my heart beating in my throat. "Clara... what did my father do?"
"He didn't just hide you to keep you safe, Sarah," Clara said, her voice breaking. "He made you the legal executor. If Dante dies, or if I die, every piece of the syndicate—the shipping lines, the real estate, the private security trusts—defaults directly to you. That's why Croft wanted you found! He didn't want to kill you at the diner. He needed you brought to Dante so he could eliminate all three of us in one single strike!"
Before Dante could respond, the yellow security beacon above the vault switched to a violent, screaming red.
An automated siren began to wail, echoing through the hollow cavern of the smelting floor with deafening intensity. Over the loudspeaker, a calm, pre-recorded voice began a sixty-second countdown:

"The keypad!" Dante yelled, his composure shattering as he slammed his shoulder against the vault door. "Sarah, the cipher! Open the door!"
