Chapter 3 - The Ring on the Desk

The lock clicked into place from the outside.

I stood alone in the cavernous silence of the nursery, the quiet breathing of sleeping Sophia the only sound breaking the stillness. My pulse thudded in my ears. I was locked in a billionaire’s fortress in Manhattan, an hour past midnight, while a dangerous man hunted for an intruder or a traitor downstairs.

Get out, a voice inside my head screamed. Find a window, find the stairs, get back to your normal, struggling life.

I walked over to the door and tried the handle. It didn't budge. Dante hadn't locked me in to trap me; he had locked me in to protect me. The irony was suffocating.

Turning away from the door, my eyes swept the massive room. The moonlight cut sharp angles across the pale hardwood floor, illuminating the expensive toys stacked neatly in corners—toys that looked like they had never been played with. On the mahogany desk where Dante had set the photograph, a small stack of mail and documents lay scattered.

My gaze caught on an open leather folio near the edge of the desk.

Protruding from the flap was a corner of heavy cream-colored stationery. Written across it in sharp, elegant handwriting was a name that made my blood run cold.

Elena Vance.

I froze. I stared across the room at the sleeping child, then back at the desk. Curiosity warred with sheer terror, but my feet moved toward the desk of their own accord. I reached out and pulled the document free from the folio.

It wasn't a business letter. It was a confidential background check, complete with a photograph of me taken three weeks ago outside the bakery storefront I was trying to buy.

My breath hitched. Dante hadn't just met me by chance tonight. He hadn't stumbled upon me because Sophia wandered into my aisle.

He knew who I was before he even walked into Bellanote.

I turned the page with shaking fingers. Financial records, lease applications for the bakery space, my tax filings, my mother’s medical debt history from five years ago—all neatly cataloged, highlighted, and analyzed. And stapled to the back was a single bank transfer receipt showing a massive, anonymous deposit made into my struggling savings account yesterday morning—enough to pay off my bakery lease in full, with zero explanation.

I hadn't earned that money. I hadn't won a grant.

Dante Russo had bought my debt, tracked my movements, and engineered my entire life over the past month.

“Looking for answers?”

The deep, calm voice came from the doorway.

I whipped around, dropping the paper back onto the desk. Dante stood leaning against the doorframe. The lock had clicked open silently. He wasn't holding a weapon, but the cold, flat look in his gray eyes was far more terrifying.

“You investigated me,” I said, my voice trembling with a mixture of shock and rising fury. “You knew who I was before tonight. You set all of this up.”

“I didn't set up my wife’s disappearance, Elena,” Dante replied evenly, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him. “And I didn't plan for Sophia to walk across a crowded restaurant and climb into your arms. But when you own a world like mine, you don't leave variables to chance. I check everyone who comes within a square mile of my family.”

“You bought my bakery lease!” I stepped toward him, my hands curling into fists at my sides. “You played with my life like it was some piece on a chessboard! Why? What do I have to do with your wife?”

Dante stopped just inches from me. Up close, the lines of exhaustion on his face seemed deeper, starker. He looked down at me not with anger, but with a heavy, devastating realization.

“You don't know why I looked into you?” Dante asked quietly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined evidence bag. Inside it rested a silver pendant on a broken chain.

May you like

My eyes dropped to the metal. The breath left my lungs in a single, ragged gasp.

It was my mother’s pendant—the one she had lost the night she walked out on our family twenty years ago.
