Chapter 14 - Shadows in the Upper Ranks

Before we could mobilize, Dante summoned his five top lieutenants to the reinforced strategy room on the second floor. The mahogany table was covered in high-resolution satellite imagery of the Hudson Valley and thermal floor plans of the old Blackwood Ironworks.

Outside the reinforced windows, dawn was threatening to break over Manhattan, painting the skyline in bleak shades of violet and gray. Down the hall, Sophia was still asleep under the protective guard of two armed sentries and Dr. Mercer.

"Croft has at least twenty seasoned mercenaries holding the smelting facility," said Leo, Dante’s second-in-command, a scarred veteran who had served the Moretti family for three decades. Leo tapped a blueprint with his pen. "The main entrance is rigged with tripwire claymores. The access roads are monitored by thermal drone surveillance. A standard assault will take thirty minutes to breach—by then, Clara will be dead."

"We aren't mounting a standard assault," Dante stated, leaning over the table, both hands planted on the polished wood. "Sarah knows the subterranean water intake tunnels beneath the facility. Marcus Vance built them to route coolant from the river before the environmental bans shut the plant down."

Leo glanced up, his expression skeptical and hardened. "With all due respect, Boss, we don't know this girl. Twenty-four hours ago she was pouring coffee on Forty-Second Street. Now she’s dictating our tactical approach to a fortress run by Victor Croft?"

"She took a bullet graze protecting my daughter tonight, Leo," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made every man in the room straighten their spine. "While three men inside this very house were looking the other way. If there is a question of loyalty in this room, it does not belong to Sarah."

The room fell dead silent. Leo dropped his gaze, nodding curtly.

I stepped up to the blueprints, tracing the dark blue lines that snaked beneath the main smelting floor. "The intake valves are submerged four feet under the Hudson riverbed, but the maintenance walkway remains dry even during high tide. The tunnel bypasses Croft’s surface sensors and empties into the auxiliary boiler room beneath the vault."

"And the cipher?" Dante asked, turning to me.

"The cipher is an eighty-character alphanumeric string split into two halves," I explained. "The first half was burned into Clara’s memory. The second half is keyed to my father's original biometric ledger—which I have committed to memory since the day I turned eighteen. Croft can torture Clara for months, but without my half, the system locks permanently and wipes the accounts."

Suddenly, the encrypted tactical comms unit on the table emitted a high-frequency squawk. A static-laced voice cut through the room:

*“Alpha team to Citadel. Perimeter sensor four tripped on the north terrace. We have a runner.”*

Dante moved toward the surveillance monitor instantly. The camera feed showed one of his personal perimeter drivers sprinting toward a black sedan parked in the alley behind the brownstone, a satchel clutched tightly in his hand.

"Arthur didn't act alone," Dante gritted out, grabbing his radio. "Take him alive!"

A muffled gunshot echoed from the alley through the monitors. The driver collapsed onto the wet pavement before he reached the car. Standing over him, lowering a suppressed handgun, was someone wearing the tactical uniform of Dante's private security team. The figure looked up at the camera, raised his weapon, and fired directly into the lens. The feed went to static.
