Chapter 15 - The Ghost Station

The betrayal went deeper than Arthur. Croft had seeded sleeper agents into Dante’s perimeter over months, waiting for the right moment to strike. We couldn't trust the convoy. We couldn't trust the secondary motorcade.
"We move now," Dante ordered, tossing aside his formal coat and pulling on a Kevlar vest beneath a dark tactical jacket. "Leo, secure the Citadel. Double the perimeter guards on Sophia's floor. No one leaves this house, and no one enters without my personal iris verification. If anyone steps within ten yards of Sophia's room without authorization, put a bullet in their chest."
"Understood, Boss," Leo replied, his jaw set like granite.
Ten minutes later, Dante and I slipped out of the brownstone’s underground delivery tunnel inside an unmarked, armored SUV. The rain had picked up again, drumming a relentless rhythm against the reinforced windshield as we sped north on the Henry Hudson Parkway, leaving the glittering towers of Manhattan behind for the dark, overgrown reaches of the Hudson Valley.
The silence between us in the cabin was heavy, charged with unspoken truths and twenty years of accumulated ghosts.
"You knew my wife was taken from the beginning, didn't you?" Dante asked quietly, keeping his eyes on the winding highway ahead.
"I didn't know who she was until Arthur spoke her name tonight," I answered, watching the trees blur past in the rain. "When I was twelve, my father gave me a photograph before he put me on the bus to Newark. It was a picture of him standing with a young girl outside a townhouse on Fifth Avenue. On the back, he wrote: *Protect Clara. She carries the family truth.*"
Dante’s hands tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles cracked. "Clara was Marcus Vance’s niece. Her mother was your father's sister."
The revelation hit me like a sudden drop in cabin pressure. I turned my head sharply toward him, my voice barely above a whisper. "Clara is my cousin?"
"Yes," Dante said, his voice rough with emotion. "When your father died, Marcus knew Victor Croft would hunt down every branch of the Vance bloodline to seize the inheritance trusts. Marcus sent Clara to my father for protection. We raised her. Eventually... I married her. But she never stopped searching for you, Sarah. She spent ten years trying to find Marcus’s lost daughter."
A lump formed in my throat, hot and suffocating. All those years I had spent hiding in cheap diners, changing names, scrubbing tables, believing I was entirely alone in the world—my family had been looking for me. They had been trying to bring me home.
"And now she's in that vault because of me," I said, my voice shaking.
May you like
"No," Dante replied, reaching across the center console and gripping my trembling hand with an iron certainty that steadied my spinning world. "She is in that vault because Victor Croft is a parasite. And in less than an hour, Sarah, we are going to burn his empire to the ground."
Ahead of us, through the thick mist of the riverbank, the rusted iron towers and crumbling brick smokestacks of the Blackwood Ironworks loomed like a rotting carcass against the gray morning sky.
