Chapter 8 - The Cost of Courage“It’s not sentimental, Martin,” Nicole countered firmly, looking directly at the board members. “It’s sustainable business. Our workers are not disposable assets. Their loyalty and safety are what make this company profitable.”

Julian stepped forward, presenting the actual safety logs and maintenance records from Building C, proving that Martin had secretly suppressed critical repair reports to inflate short-term profit margins—a move that had nearly caused a catastrophic boiler explosion two years prior.
The room erupted into shocked chatter. Several major shareholders turned toward Martin with dark, accusing eyes.
Recognizing that the tide had turned completely, the lead board member called for an immediate vote on Nicole’s restructuring plan.
One by one, hands went up around the table.
By an overwhelming majority, Nicole’s plan was approved, securing the jobs and livelihoods of over two hundred families. Martin Vance was stripped of his vice chairmanship and escorted out of the building by security.
As the meeting adjourned, the board members lined up to congratulate Nicole on her brilliant strategy and courage.
Julian stood near the door, a proud, handsome smile on his face. When the room finally cleared, Nicole walked over to him, her eyes bright with unshed tears of relief.
“We did it,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

“You did it, Nicole,” Julian corrected gently, taking both of her hands in his. “You stood up for the people who needed you most.”
Without caring about the corporate cameras or the glass walls, Nicole threw her arms around Julian’s neck, kissing him deeply as the weight of years of isolation vanished forever.
