WARMTH IN THE BLIZZARD / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Kitchen TableAs Rosie drifted back to sleep on the sofa, the storm outside knocked out the neighborhood’s main power grid. The house plunged into darkness, save for the soft, flickering light of the candles on the table.

Julian fetched extra wool blankets, draping one gently over Nicole’s shoulders. She sat holding her warm mug with both hands, her posture softening slightly as the silence stretched between them.

“I didn't mean to invade your home, Julian,” Nicole said quietly, her voice losing its icy corporate edge. “I could have waited in the car.”

“You would have had hypothermia before midnight,” Julian replied, pulling out a chair across from her. “Besides, Rosie likes having guests. We don't get many out here.”

Nicole looked down at the scratched pine table. “You have a lovely home. It feels... alive.”

Julian smiled faintly, looking toward the living room where his daughter slept. “It’s small, and the plumbing groans in the winter, but it’s ours. After my wife passed away three years ago, I promised Rosie that no matter how hard things got, this house would always be safe.”

Nicole went still. The mention of loss seemed to strike a hidden nerve within her.

“My father died when I was twelve,” Nicole confessed softly, staring into the flickering candle flame. “He was an independent contractor. When his company went under during a bad winter, he lost everything—our house, his health. I swore to myself back then that I would never be vulnerable. I built my career so no one could ever put me in a position to lose control.”

Julian watched her closely, seeing the vulnerable young girl behind the ruthless corporate executive. “So you built a fortress.”

“Yes,” she whispered.

“The problem with fortresses, Nicole,” Julian said gently, “is that they keep out the cold... but they also keep out the warmth.”
