WARMTH IN THE BLIZZARD / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - Whispers in the SnowLater that afternoon, a snowplow cleared the main county road, allowing Julian to drive Nicole back to her downtown penthouse. The silence in the truck was no longer cold; it was thick with unspoken feelings and shifting perspectives.

When they arrived at her luxury high-rise, Nicole turned to Julian before stepping out into the slush.

“Thank you, Julian,” she said, her dark eyes resting on his face with genuine warmth. “For the soup... and for reminding me of things I had forgotten.”

“Stay warm, Nicole,” Julian smiled.

Over the next two weeks, the atmosphere at Northstar Industrial Systems became suffocating. Rumors of the impending lay-offs leaked through the ranks, spreading fear across the plant floor.

Yet, subtle changes began occurring on the executive floor. Nicole repeatedly delayed signing the final execution orders for the maintenance cuts, demanding deeper audits and alternative cost-saving measures from the finance team.

Martin Vance noticed the shift immediately. He confronted Nicole in her glass office, his face flushed with anger.

“What are you doing, Nicole?” Martin demanded, slamming a file onto her mahogany desk. “You’re dragging your feet on the restructuring! The investors are expecting a fifteen percent reduction in overhead by the end of the quarter!”

“The proposed cuts in maintenance will compromise safety and destroy morale, Martin,” Nicole responded coolly, standing her ground. “There are other ways to trim the budget without throwing two hundred families into the street.”

Martin sneered, stepping closer. “Don't get soft on me now, Nicole. I heard about your little rescue during the storm. If you let a grease-monkey maintenance guy cloud your judgment, the board will replace you before the month is out.”
