Chapter 16 - The Abandoned Cabin
Halfway up the mountain, the group encountered a sudden mountain rainstorm that turned the dirt trail into treacherous mud. Seeking shelter, they discovered a dilapidated log cabin hidden inside a pine grove. Inside, protected from the weather, Edith found old wooden cookware and a rusted iron stove. To keep morale up, she pulled dried beef and flour from her saddlebags, making a warm, hearty meal over a small fire. Even miles away from home, her food brought warmth and hope to the exhausted group.
