Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

One year after our wedding, the morning sun poured through the wide French doors of our master bedroom.
The room was warm, filled with the sweet scent of fresh lavender and the soft sound of classical piano music.
I stood by the bassinet, looking down at our three-week-old newborn son, Leo. He had dark hair and his mother’s calm, sweet brow, sleeping peacefully in his soft cotton swaddle.
Elena walked over in her robe, wrapping her arms around my waist from behind and resting her chin against my shoulder.
"He looks just like his father," Elena murmured softly.
"He has his mother's pure heart," I smiled, turning to kiss her lips.
The bedroom door clicked open.
Nine-year-old Lily tiptoed into the room, holding her favorite illustrated storybook, walking over to the bassinet with a proud, protective smile.
"Is my baby brother awake?" Lily whispered.
"He's just waking up, sweetie," Elena smiled.
Lily reached out her small, gentle hand, lightly stroking Leo’s soft cheek. The newborn cooed softly, curling his tiny fingers around Lily's thumb.

"I’m going to protect him forever, Daddy," Lily declared proudly. "Just like you protect us."
I pulled both Elena and Lily against my chest, looking down at our sleeping son with a heart overflowing with boundless gratitude.
