Chapter 5 - The Purge of the Syndicate

Over the next thirty days, with my health completely restored and my mind razor-sharp, I initiated a total, ruthless restructuring of the Blackwell empire.

I knew that to build a true, safe future for Lily and Elena, the shadows of the mafia had to be permanently dismantled.

I called an emergency conclave of all five Chicago syndicate families at the historic Drake Hotel ballroom.

Over forty capos, underbosses, and syndicate lieutenants sat around the perimeter of the grand banquet hall under heavy armed security.

Sitting at the center of the room was Vincent Moretti, looking smug, flanked by his four top hitmen, unaware that federal marshals were surrounding the city block outside.

I walked into the ballroom alone, wearing an immaculate three-piece bespoke navy suit, radiating the calm, terrifying power of a don who had walked out of the grave.

Moretti’s eyes narrowed in shock. "Blackwell... they said you were on your deathbed."

"They lied, Vincent," I replied, taking the seat at the head of the long table.

I dropped a heavy steel briefcase onto the table, popping the latches with a resounding click.

Inside were unredacted audio recordings, maritime customs manifests, and encrypted transaction logs detailing Moretti’s assassination plot, his thallium supply chain from Eastern Europe, and his thirty years of extortion across the Midwest.

"You tried to poison me in my sleep, Vincent," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings like thunder. "You used my fiancée, and you threatened my family."

Moretti leapt to his feet, reaching for his sidearm: "Take him down!"

Before his guards could draw, the grand double doors of the ballroom burst open.

Fifty armed FBI tactical agents and federal marshals swarmed into the hall, laser sights illuminating Moretti and his men in crimson crosshairs.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!" Special Agent Vance announced. "Vincent Moretti, you are under arrest for attempted murder, federal racketeering, and international trafficking."

As Moretti was forced to the marble floor in steel chains, his empire collapsing in a single hour, I stood untouched, walking out into the bright morning air.

The war was won without firing a single shot in front of my family.
