Chapter 3 - The Toxicology Report

Twenty minutes later, Dr. Harris rushed back into the master suite, holding a digital tablet with red-flagged chemical chromatography readouts.
"Thallium acetate mixed with transdermal DMSO," Dr. Harris reported, his hands shaking slightly. "It’s a tasteless, odorless heavy-metal toxin that mimics systemic hypothermia, neuropathic shock, and multi-organ failure. It was being absorbed directly through the suboccipital skin on the back of your neck every night as you slept."
Dr. Harris turned to me with grave urgency.
"Lucas, the dose was calibrated to cause total cardiac arrest within forty-eight hours. If that little girl hadn't uncovered that vial tonight, you would have died in your sleep before Wednesday morning."
A cold rage, deadlier than any fever, settled into my bones.
Marco walked over, holding Vanessa’s decrypted iPhone connected to a tactical forensic reader.
"We cracked the encrypted messages, Boss," Marco said, projecting the transcripts onto the bedroom wall monitor. "Vanessa wasn't working alone. She has been coordinating with Vincent Moretti for four months."
Vincent Moretti was my chief rival—a ruthless, aging don whose control over the East Coast ports had been choked off by my maritime expansion.
"The agreement was simple," Marco continued. "Once you died of an apparent 'unexplained cardiac illness,' Vanessa would present a forged power-of-attorney and marriage waiver, liquidate sixty percent of the Blackwell-Vale maritime trust, and hand port access over to the Moretti family in exchange for a thirty-million-dollar offshore payout."
I looked across the room at Vanessa, who was cowering against the window, her mascara running in dark streaks down her pale face.
"You traded my life for thirty pieces of silver, Vanessa," I said quietly.
"Lucas, Vincent threatened my father's Senate seat!" she sobbed, dropping to her knees on the marble floor. "He said he would release the campaign fraud files! I had no choice!"

"There is always a choice," I replied with absolute, icy finality. "Marco, escort Miss Vale to the Cook County Federal Courthouse. Hand the full forensic dossier and intercepted wiretaps directly to the United States Attorney’s Organized Crime Division."
As the guards hauled Vanessa out of the penthouse, screaming and weeping into the empty hallway, the room fell into peaceful, profound quiet.
