Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Verified

By dawn, Dr. Harris had administered the specialized Prussian blue chelating antidote, flushing the toxic heavy metals from my bloodstream.
As the sun crested over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold and amber, the crushing cold that had haunted my body for three months completely evaporated. Strength surged back into my limbs.
I walked into the sunlit private dining room wearing a tailored charcoal suit, feeling alive and reborn.
Sitting at the long oak table, eating warm blueberry waffles, were Elena and Lily.
When Lily saw me enter without a cane or blanket, she beamed, waving her syrup-covered fork. "Mr. Lucas! You're not shivering anymore!"
"Thanks to you, little bird," I smiled, sitting in the chair right beside her.
Elena looked up, her hands twisting her cloth napkin nervously. "Mr. Lucas... now that Miss Vale is gone, I can pack our bags and find a new place—"
"You're not going anywhere, Elena," I interrupted gently, placing a sealed envelope on the table.
Inside was the certified paternity report that Dr. Harris had expedited at sunrise.
"GENETIC MARKER ANALYSIS: LUCAS BLACKWELL AND LILY RAMIREZ — 99.99% BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY CONFIRMED."
Elena froze. Tears spilled over her dark lashes, falling silently onto the table.
"You knew," I said softly.
"I never wanted your money, Lucas," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "Eight years ago, after you disappeared, I found out I was pregnant. When I saw your name on the news—when I saw the dangerous world you lived in—I was terrified. I wanted to protect her from the guns, the enemies, and the shadows."
"And when you lost your nursing job?"
"I lived in a shelter before I would use our daughter as leverage," Elena said with fierce, unyielding pride.
I looked at this incredible woman who had endured poverty, hunger, and hardship just to keep our child safe, and I felt a wave of profound humility and awe.

I reached across the table, taking Elena’s hand into mine.
"You protected her when I wasn't there, Elena," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "Now it’s my turn to protect you both. This house is your home. Forever."
