Chapter 2 - The Ghost of South Side

The silence in the penthouse was broken only by the rhythmic drumming of rain against the reinforced glass.

"Lucas... darling, please!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice trembling in panicked hysterics as she stepped toward the bed. "I don't know how that got in there! Someone is framing me! It was probably the staff—it was probably Elena!"

"Silence," I commanded, the raw, terrifying authority of the Chicago underworld returning to my voice.

I signaled my head of security, Marco, who stepped into the room with two tactical enforcers.

"Seal every exit on this floor," I ordered, resting my hand on Lily's shoulder to keep the little girl calm. "Dr. Harris, bag that vial and run an immediate chemical spectrometer analysis. Marco, confiscate Vanessa's phone, her passport, and the access keys to the family vault."

"You have no right to touch my belongings!" Vanessa shrieked as Marco took her designer clutch. "My father is Senator Vale! You cannot treat me like a common suspect!"

"Your father’s campaign was funded by my offshore accounts, Vanessa," I said coldly. "And right now, you are three seconds away from being escorted to the cellar."

While Dr. Harris rushed the sample to the private medical lab on the third floor, Elena gently pulled Lily against her side, her eyes welling with tears.

"Mr. Lucas, please let me take Lily downstairs," Elena whispered. "She shouldn't see this."

I looked at Elena.

Eight years ago, before I inherited the syndicate and built this high-rise fortress, I had been an undercover logistics specialist operating in the South Side. I had spent one unforgettable, tender summer with Elena—a bright, beautiful nursing student whose warmth had made me dream of leaving the shadows behind. When syndicate rivalries ignited a street war, I vanished overnight to keep the violence from touching her life.

Three weeks ago, when my head of domestic staffing brought Elena and her daughter in from a local women's shelter, I had recognized her immediately.

And looking down at Lily now—at her stubborn little chin, her sharp, observant eyes, and the unique birthmark shaped like a crescent moon on her left wrist identical to my own—the truth hit me with the force of a freight train.

"Elena," I said softly, my voice devoid of the cold don's armor. "Lily stays right here."
